The in-medium dynamics of heavy particles are governed by transport coefficients. The heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient, $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, is an object of special interest in the literature, but one which has proven notoriously difficult to estimate, despite the fact that it has been computed by weak-coupling methods at next-to-leading order accuracy, and by lattice simulations of the pure SU(3) gauge theory. Another coefficient, $\ensuremath{\gamma}$, has been recently identified. It can be understood as the dispersive counterpart of $\ensuremath{\kappa}$. Little is known about $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Both $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ are, however, of foremo…

Linear instability of the vertical throughflow in a horizontal porous layer saturated by a power-law fluid

2016

Abstract The effects of the vertical throughflow of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid on the onset of convective instability in a horizontal porous layer are investigated. The extended Darcy’s model of momentum diffusion is employed together with the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation. A stationary basic solution for the vertical throughflow is determined analytically. The basic velocity and temperature fields turn out to be independent of the non-Newtonian rheology. A linear stability analysis is carried out, leading to a fourth-order eigenvalue problem. A numerical solution of the eigenvalue problem is employed to obtain the neutral stability curves and the critical Rayleigh number for the o…

Heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient in 3D gluon plasma

2020

We study the heavy-quark momentum diffusion coefficient in far from equilibrium gluon plasma in a self-similar regime using real-time lattice techniques. We use 3 methods for the extraction: an unequal time electric field 2-point correlator integrated over the time difference, a spectral reconstruction (SR) method based on the measured equal time electric field correlator and a kinetic theory (KT) formula. The time-evolution of the momentum diffusion coefficient extracted using all methods is consistent with an approximate $t^{\frac{-1}{2}}$ power law. We also study the extracted diffusion coefficient as a function of the upper limit of the time integration and observe that including the in…

The errant life of a heavy quark in the quark–gluon plasma

2011

In the high-temperature phase of QCD, the heavy-quark momentum diffusion constant determines, via a fluctuation–dissipation relation, how fast a heavy quark kinetically equilibrates. This transport coefficient can be extracted from thermal correlators via a Kubo formula. We present a lattice calculation of the relevant Euclidean correlators in the gluon plasma, based on a recent formulation of the problem in heavy-quark effective field theory (HQET). We find a ≈20% enhancement of the Euclidean correlator at maximal time separation as the temperature is lowered from 6Tc to 2Tc, pointing to stronger interactions at lower temperatures. At the same time, the correlator becomes flatter from 6Tc …

Quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions: an open quantum system approach

2016

We address the evolution of heavy-quarkonium states in an expanding quark-gluon plasma by implementing effective field theory techniques in the framework of open quantum systems. In this setting we compute the nuclear modification factors for quarkonia that are $S$-wave Coulombic bound states in a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. The calculation is performed at an accuracy that is leading-order in the heavy-quark density expansion and next-to-leading order in the multipole expansion. The quarkonium density-matrix evolution equations can be written in the Lindblad form, and, hence, they account for both dissociation and recombination. Thermal mass shifts, thermal widths and the Lindblad …
